The word periodontal means “around the tooth,” and periodontal diseases attack the gums and the bone that support the teeth.

Gum disease starts with plaque, a sticky film of food debris, bacteria and saliva. When plaque is not removed, it turns into tartar. If plaque and tartar are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone, advancing the periodontal disease.

Signs and symptoms of periodontal disease include:
-
Bleeding gums.
-
Loose teeth caused by bone loss or weakened periodontal fibers.
-
New, larger spacing between teeth, caused by bone loss.
-
Persistent bad breath.
-
Discharge around the teeth and gums.
-
Tenderness or discomfort, caused by plaque, tartar and bacteria that irritate the gums and teeth.
